Game intelligence decides matches. Nobody was measuring it.
Before elite players receive the ball, they scan. Quick head movements, each a fraction of a second, build a picture of space, teammates and opponents. Scanning is the necessary condition for game intelligence: research links frequent scanning to better decisions on the ball. Coaches teach it. Analysts talk about it. Until now, nobody could measure it at scale.
Watching and guessing
Live, the eye follows the ball. On video, a single scan is over in a blink. Manual counting ends at one player in one match, and even that takes hours.

Our algorithm reads the head orientation of all players in every frame of a match. It detects each scan, when it happens, how long it lasts and where on the pitch it takes place.

Players scan differently with and without the ball. Some of the biggest untapped potential sits in what players see when the opponent has possession.

Where a player stands changes what he needs to see. Half-spaces, the centre and the final quarter of the pitch each demand their own scanning behaviour.
